Abstract:

In India, the idea of mob lynching is not new; instances of it date back to the partition era, where hundreds of villages migrated from Pakistan and India, respectively, out of pure fear. This paper examines the phenomenon of mob lynching by assessing its historical development and core factors and societal effects throughout Indian society. Social media serves as a significant factor that leads to the increase of mob lynching because it provides an avenue for misinformation to spread quickly, which triggers violence and allows people to behave like vigilantes. A detailed evaluation explains the factors behind mob violence normalization in particular regions through political speeches, cultural elements, and religious or communal disagreements. The analysis demonstrates how legal problems combine with governmental ineffectiveness to prevent or respond to these criminal acts. This paper evaluates major lynching cases from 2015 to 2018, the Dadri mob killing and the Alwar mob violence, to establish how such acts result in societal breakdown and rights abuses. Additionally, the paper examines the present limitations of legal systems that address mob-lynching incidents before proposing specific solutions to combat this rising threat. The struggle against this severe issue requires enhanced legal systems, higher levels of political supervisory power, and community-focused education.
